Name: Lanra Miller
Personal Quote: “When you’re trying to help someone out of a bad situation, there is no such thing as ‘hopeless’ or ‘beyond help.’ The only limitation is how much are you willing to give to help them.”
Gender: Female
Age: Early 20s
Appearance: Medium height, and fairly bony from inadequate nutrition and sleep. Her hair is sandy colored, and usually cropped around her ears. When it gets longer, she ties it in a simple ponytail until she gets around to cutting it again. Her clothes are almost always plain and practical, usually just a t-shirt and jeans. Her one bit of jewelry is a small malachite pendant she wears around her neck; it's usually tucked under her shirt.
Are you something supernatural? If so, what? A mage, though other than that, she's an ordinary human.
Talents, powers, or special skills: Her magic is oriented around the element of earth, specifically, plant magic. She can make plants grow faster, bigger, and stronger, as well as enhance various attributes, such as nutrition, healing, and resistance to things like drought, disease and fire. However, there are limits to what she can do. She could, for example, take an acorn and make it grow into a fully adult tree in just a few seconds. However, the tree would die after a few hours, depending on how much she rushes the growth process.
Lanra’s specialty is using her powers to make various herbal medicines and teas. She can also use her powers for combat (her favorite strategy was to scatter rose seeds around an opponent, and then instantly grow them into thorny rose vines, which would attack her opponents). However, over the past couple years, her combat abilities have atrophied as she focused more on herbalism.
Personality (I’m going to combine this with strengths/weaknesses and likes/dislikes. Don’t worry, those all get covered): Could be summed up as, “Constantly wanting to help everyone and everything.” She is also stubborn as mule (see strengths and weaknesses for elaboration on this). This can be a great strength, since she will keep trying to help someone or something long after others have given up.
But a lot of the time, this can be more of a weakness than strength. It often leads her to pry and try to interfere in other people’s business. If they try to tell her to leave them the f*** alone, she’ll simply ignore them. In her mind, there’s no concept of “mind your own business;” she’s convinced that people just don’t know what’s good for them. Sometimes, her determination to help people only makes the situation worse, and even puts herself and/or others in danger. Even then, though, it won’t deter her. The most she learns from such mistakes is, “I need to find some other way of helping these people.”
She’s also really bad with money, because she’s constantly giving it to or spending it on “people who need it.” She has a lot of trouble holding a job too. She’s tried working at community health clinics, and other charities that pay small stipends, but she keeps getting distracted by other causes that she feels need her attention, and then either quits or gets fired. Right now her only income comes from a limited allowance she gets from her parents each month (they will no longer give her more money if she winds up donating it all to some homeless guy on the street), and from occasionally selling herbal medicines, teas and other stuff she makes to vendors at local bazaars.
However, this doesn’t mean that she’s totally naïve. She’s seen enough of the world to know a lot about how it works. It’s just that, where most people would think, “One person can’t fix this alone,” Lanra thinks, “I can fix this by myself. I just need to work harder.” Nor is she constantly cheerful and optimistic; her mood is usually some mixture of frustration and determination, depending on how well her day’s been going.
History: I’ll say this up front: she doesn’t have a dark and troubled past or anything like that. Lanra comes from an upper middle class family of mages in the Midwest. Everyone who had magic, had ability related to one of the four classical elements (fire, earth, air, water). She got along with her parents and younger brother ok, if not perfectly, and they’re all still alive and well. Community service and charity work are extremely important values in her family, but most of her family is pretty realistic about what they can and can’t do. Lanra’s an outlier in that respect (though her great uncle had the same problem she did. He didn’t meet a happy end).
When she was in high school, Lanra’s family encouraged her to do lots of charity work, hoping that if she saw up close what the world’s problems were like, she might get some more perspective. If anything, though, it just made her more determined. After graduating, she went to college at a special school that offered both magical and non-magical education, where she majored in biology and herbalism. During one of her summer breaks, she and her brother, Riley, along with their friend, Erin, spent some time in Arsheeity before leaving after a few months. Part of the reason she came was that her mother’s family lived there for several generations
Why are you in Arsheeity? During her senior year of college, Lanra started hearing stories about Arsheeity’s decline. So now her current charity project is “rescuing” the city and the people in it from whatever.
---------------------------------
*Note: Hopefully, I’ve made this obvious in her profile, but just to be on the safe side, I want to make things clear: Lanra is not supposed to be a Fixer Sue (i.e.: Mary Sue who goes around solving everyone’s problems, thus destroying all interesting conflict before it starts). If anything, she’s a deconstruction of that character type, though I didn’t have that planned when I started out. I made her this way because it provides an easy way to make her get involved in various conflicts that happen, as well as make the conflict more interesting by having her be nosy and annoying.
So, if any character tells Lanra to f*** out of their business, I won’t be offended. Lanra will probably just ignore you anyway, and keep pestering you for a while. If you, the RPer, want her to stop bothering your characters, ask me OOC, and I can arrange to make her get distracted by some random starving orphan on the street. Who’s dying from AIDs or something.
Also, for those of you who remember her from the first Arsheeity: Everything that happened to her there is canon unless I change my mind. Right now, the only retcon I’ve done is on her reasons for going there the first time around, and her ties to the city.
I’m probably gonna bring in Erin and Riley at some point too, once I figure out how I want to RP them.
*looks at profile* holy shit, that's long...
